Gear Reducers and their application in motor systems

October 06, 2020

A gear reducer is a vital part of a motor engine and is used to manage situations where higher torque and/or lower rotational speed are necessary.  Let us take a look at their use and application in the automotive industry.

Gear reducers are meant to alter the output of speed in relation to torque and this particular application is a pivotal aspect of vehicle movement.

So when the vehicle moves at a slower speed but is also at the same time going uphill and needs more torque, that is when a gear reducer is employed. Unlike gearboxes, reducers do not transfer speed. Gearboxes refers to any piece of equipment connecting a motor and a machine that consists of a series of gears, also known as a gear train.

The reducers effectively decrease the speed produced by a motor to control the speed at which the machinery is operating. The reducer converts that speed into torque, increasing the torque of the machinery. Multiplying the amount of torque generated by the motor increases the amount of usable power for the machine—this process is said to create a “mechanical advantage”. In greater context, the reducer is basically a tool used to increase efficiency in facility operations. It is also used to promote road and work safety.

When choosing a gear reducer, one must take into account a few things such as the availability of spare or replacement parts and after sales service. Having a regular maintenance schedule is vital when working with such machinery as reducers. At Bauer GMC, we have a wide variety of machinery that are built to maximize the efficiency of your facility operations. We also have a highly skilled team of specialists who can repair gear motors and reducers. Contact us today if you are in need of high-quality geared motor solutions!
