Things to Consider When Using Gear Motors

April 15, 2019

There are many things to consider when using gear motors, especially if you’re not an expert. To help you learn what to look out for, here are some tips to keep you up to speed.

Pick the Right Size

Gear motors are not a “one size fits all” scenario. In fact, size plays a pivotal role in selecting an appropriate motor. If the motor is too small, then it will be overworked resulting in overheating. Unless you’re constantly checking the temperature of the motor, you won’t be able to detect the problem until it’s too late. To help you select the correct size, manufacturers have software specifically designed to calculate the optimal size based on your parameters.

Do the Math

Understanding the relationship between torque output and input is crucial. Since the motor’s primary use is to act as a power transmission component, it’s imperative that you acknowledge how much force it can handle, based on the level of torque it produces. For instance, a gearbox ratio of 10:1 means that there’s 10 times more force on the output side than the input side. Be vigilant on what your motor can handle to ensure that it doesn’t fall apart.

Think About All the Variables

We’ve covered 2 major issues to look out for, but unfortunately, there are other factors to consider. For example, keeping your motor in an enclosed environment might be detrimental since condensation can occur due to heat being generated in a small space. To help alleviate this problem, proper ventilation systems should be installed to ensure that the temperature remains consistent. Furthermore, gear motors that experience a sudden shock from excessive acceleration can become compromised as well.
